Fashion Items to Save on and Splurge on: Strike A Balance
Last Updated on by Bree
This post will discuss fashion items to save on and splurge on.
Because when it comes to fashion and style, it’s vital to find a balance.
And even if I’m talking about splurging and saving, most of these items can be found in secondhand stores.
So you can rest assured that you won’t break the bank even on the items you’re splurging on.
Let’s dive in and explore what wardrobe items to splurge and save on.
Fashion Items to Save On
Fashion items to save money without looking cheap are basics like plain tees, tank tops, camis, loungewear, etc.
Basic T-shirts
The basic T-shirt is a wardrobe staple.
It’s comfortable, versatile, and can be dressed up or down.
You can easily take a basic tee from day to night out and still look chic.
For a casual look
I’ll wear
- a basic tee tucked into jeans
- With sneakers or slingback kitten heels(if I feel like it) and
- throw on a jacket.
But for a more dressy look, you can
- Tuck a basic tee in a midi or mini skirt.
- Throw on a blazer, and
- Slip on a pair of lovely shoes and a statement necklace.
And you’ll be looking more stylish.
Basic tees cost less than $10.
You can find them in thrift stores, retail stores, and places like Walmart and Target.
I recently got a quality plain black tee from Burlington.
But if shopping at Burlington isn’t your jam, then stroll into an Old Navy, Gap, etc, to pick up your basic tee.
Trendy accessories
Accessories like bold earrings, statement necklaces, etc., are fashion items I prefer to save on because trends change.
And also your taste in fashion can change too.
So, if you love trendy accessories to uplift your outfit, check ASOS, Etsy, or even Amazon.
Though I haven’t bought accessories from Amazon or Etsy, ASOS is one of my favorite places to get them.
And since most of us don’t like used earrings or necklaces, I can’t encourage you to check the thrift stores.
But if you don’t mind used earrings and statement necklaces, knock yourself out at the thrift stores.
Loungewear
Loungewear is another fashion item you should consider saving on.
Because you don’t wear them anywhere aside from staying at home or running errands around your neighborhood.
So, there’s no point spending a fortune on loungewear.
Besides, stores like Target have cute, affordable, and good-quality loungewear.
One thing to look for when buying loungewear is the fabric.
You want soft, breathable cotton fabric, especially for the bottoms.
Because you don’t want a fabric that makes you uncomfortable or sweat.
Remember, to save on fashion items, it’s vital to focus on quality and be mindful of your budget.
Also, you don’t even have to buy a complete set of loungewear.
Instead, you can buy a couple of nice sweatpants or leggings and pair them up with a soft cami or tank top.
And you’ll have a cuter loungewear that doesn’t get boring.
Fashion Items to Splurge On
Now let’s look at fashion items to splurge on:
Fashion items I tend to splurge a little on, as a secondhand shopper, are things like formal dresses, shoes, purses, jewelry, coats, etc.
And that’s because these items are timeless and can elevate your style.
You can still buy these timeless pieces from secondhand or discount fashion stores, even if we’re talking splurging.
So here they are:
Bags and purses
A good quality bag or purse can make a cheap outfit look expensive.
A quality bag paired with a basic T and jeans makes you look rich but not showing off. Lol.
Also, if you must splurge on a purse, make it one that’s cute enough to sit on a dinner table when you’re out.
You know, the kind you see on TJ Maxx ads?
That’s what I’m talking about.
One of my favorite places to get quality bags and purses is reselling websites like Poshmark, Mercari, eBay, Thredup, etc.
But if you prefer brand new without paying full price, TJ Maxx is where it’s at.

High-quality shoes
One of the fashion items I’d never compromise on is shoes.
I love me some good quality shoes.
Whether I buy pumps, sneakers, or sandals, they must be good quality.
And I always find them in the reselling marketplaces.
Did you know some resellers sell new-with-tags shoes for a fraction of the retail price?
I’ve bought brand-new shoes from Mercari and Poshmark several times.
But sometimes, reselling marketplaces might not have exactly what you want.
That’s why stores like DSW (designer shoe warehouse) exist.
DSW sells designer shoes at a discounted rate.

Quality coats are worth the splurge
Coats have a way of making you look effortlessly stylish when you find the right one.
That’s why I consider them fashion items to splurge on.
One of the things I love about the Fall/Winter season is wearing and admiring other people in stylish coats.
So, when buying coats, I don’t mind splurging a little.
Because you must consider both quality and style.
Some coat colors that spark style, in my opinion, are camel, navy, and, of course, black.
I’ve been lucky to find quality, like-new coats on Poshmark and Mercari.
Again, if you prefer brand-new, visit Burlington, Ross, or TJ Maxx stores close to you.
The little black dress
Now, let’s talk about the little black dress – the fashion piece that never goes out of style.
Every woman needs one, and trust me, it’s not just a dress; it’s a game-changer.
And one of the things about the little black dress is that you can wear it in different ways depending on the occasion.
When picking a little black dress, go for a silhouette that hugs your curves and flatters your shape.
Dress it up with statement jewelry and heels.
Or dress it down with sneakers and a denim jacket.

Blazers are a fashion item to splurge on
Another fashion item to splurge on is a blazer.
This piece is the ultimate game-changer as it makes your outfit more stylish.
A well-fitted blazer can transform your outfit from daytime to night out.
Find one in a shade that complements your skin tone.
When it comes to fabric, I prefer lightweight blazers.
And a black blazer is a wardrobe staple.
But sometimes I go for an edgy color like pink.
Denim jeans
Another fashion item to splurge on is jeans.
After buying cheap denim jeans several times and seeing it ruin my outfits, I decided to spend more on jeans.
Though you won’t catch me buying brand new high-end jeans from a retail store.
I can’t afford to spend $50 on a pair of jeans.
Instead, I’d check Thredup(referral link) for quality jeans brands like J.Crew, Joe Fresh, J Brand, Blank NYC, etc.
And most of them cost less than $20 for a pair.
But when I rock them with my top and shoes, who can tell that they were secondhand or cost under $20?
It’s how you wear your outfits, sweetie.
Also, if you don’t like secondhand, Thredup, TJ Maxx, Burlington, etc., are great places to find brand-new, discounted quality jeans.

The classic white button-down shirt
Last but not least, the classic white shirt.
The white shirt has a way of making you look classy, whether it’s tucked in blue jeans or a pencil skirt.
And the fit is key, my darlings.
That’s why it’s a fashion item to splurge a little more on.
Find a cut that flatters your body.
And when it comes to fabric, quality dry cotton or chiffon is my choice.
And where to find one depends on your budget.
But I’d try Thredup for a high-end classic white shirt without spending too much.
Also, remember that when splurging on the classic button-down white shirt, always put quality first.
It’s like that saying: “You get what you pay for.”
And boy, is that true when it comes to the plain white button-down shirt.
So whether you choose to splurge on brand-new or secondhand, take quality over quantity.

Conclusion: Fashion items to save on and splurge on
At the end of the day, consider your budget when choosing what fashion items to save on and splurge on.
Because you can’t clear your bank account on items you can’t afford.
So, while you’re saving and splurging, consider mixing your fashion with pieces from retail, consignment, and secondhand stores.
Striking this balance will help you save even when you’re splurging.
So go ahead and buy that designer bag from Poshmark, Thredup, Ross, Burlington, etc.
Or go crazy and order a pair of quality shoes from DSW, and rock it like the stylish chic you are
That’s my two cents on fashion pieces to save and splurge on.
